Conservation Weeks:  Every season, we designate one week as a conservation support trip. For each angler on these departures, MRO donates $1,000 to the WWF managed conservation trust fund. By joining these trips, anglers are investing in local efforts to conserve taimen by enjoying a great week of fishing. All donations are tax deductable for US citizens. All donations are tax deductable for US citizens. The next conservation trip is on the Lower River September 8 -18, 2012.

General Trip Description:  All three trips (Upper, Lower, Combined) have the same general itinerary.  Guests fly into the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia (UB).  After spending an evening in UB, clients hop on a chartered Cessna Caravan for a 75 – 90 minute flight from the capital to the streamside airstrip.  Anglers are usually on the river before lunch. The upper river trips include six days fishing and link floats between our six comfortable ger camps.  The lower river fishes for seven days and links floats between a combination of ger camps and adventure camps.  At the end of each river journey, anglers fly from lower strip back to UB.  Guests spend a relaxing evening in the capital city before catching an international flight for home.

Dates: We run trips only during early autumn.  Mongolia’s fishing season officially opens June 15 and the rainy season is July – August.  By late August the rivers are clearing and the fishing is peaking.  By the end of October, Mongolia is starting to get too cold for fishing.

Weather:  The weather is usually clear with warm days and cool nights.  Rain is more likely in the early season and cold more likely later in the season.  It is not uncommon to experience a couple of cool days (40’sF/5’sC) in early September and warm days in early October (70’sF/20’sC).

What to Bring:  MRO will provide you with a comprehensive packing list. It’s about the same as preparing for a guided trip to Montana in early fall. MRO supplies flies.  Guests bring their own rods (5w, 7w, 8/9w), reels, waders, etc.

Inclusions/Exclusions: The price includes two nights hotel in Ulaanbaatar, airport transfers, charter flight to/from the river, fishing permits, guide services, and all meals, lodging, soft drinks, beer, wine and classic Mongolian vodka at camp.  Price does not include international airfare, meals/drinks in UB, and gratuities.  Prices are based upon double occupancy. Trips begin and end in the capital city, Ulaanbaatar.

Booking: We request a 50%, non-refundable advance payment to hold your reservation and payment in full ninety days prior to departure.  Payments by check, wire transfer, or credit card.

References: MRO is quite fortunate to have a very high level of guest returns. We would be more than happy to provide contact information for guests who have agreed to be references.

UB Support: Mongolia River Outfitters is the "water" division of Nomadic Journeys, a major tourism operator with two decade’s experience running adventure trips to Mongolia’s outback. Our offices are located at the very center of UB near Sukhbaatar Square. While in UB, the services of a professional English-speaking guide will be available to accompany you to cultural sites, shopping and meals.  While in Mongolia, you'll benefit from the twenty-four hour support of our full-time international staff.

Non-Fishing Activities: While at the river, we can easily arrange for guided horseback riding, hiking, and cultural visits. There are several English/Mongolian speakers in camp.  We highly recommend that time allowing you visit more than the river. Mongolia is an amazing country.

Permits:  Mongolia law requires that every outfitter and foreign angler obtain a variety of fishing permits. All taimen must be released.  There are additional restrictions and active enforcement on the rivers we fish. We arrange for all permits in advance and have long-term operations and conservation agreements with all relevant government agencies.

If you choose another outfitter, please be certain that you are fishing legally. Proper taimen licenses for international anglers can cost hundreds of dollars. The outfitter must have an agreement providing access to a healthy taimen river before they can purchase permits. Permission must be secured from national, state, and local governments. Without the proper permits, you risk a fine, loss of equipment and deportation.  This sounds harsh, but too many innocent anglers have ended up in this unfortunate situation.

Flights and Visa: MRO trips begin and end in Ulaanbaatar (airport code: ULN). Korean Air, MIAT, and Air China are the primary international carriers serving Mongolia.  Guests fly via Beijing, Seoul, Osaka, Moscow or Berlin. US citizens do not currently require a visa prior to arrival in Mongolia.  Please inquire with us regarding other nationalities.

If you're interested, please contact us.  We're more than happy to send additional information and/or set up a time to call you and talk about the trips.
