The Buryat Headwaters Expedition is a wilderness float and fishing adventure exploring the most remote reaches of Mongolia’s first taimen sanctuary. These trips run with just one guide and two guests. The trip is supported by a small camp team that transfers equipment downstream using gear boats. You’ll float and fish through a diverse, mountainous landscape targeting taimen, Amur trout, lenok, and Amur pike.
Limited numbers, remote location, incredible fishing, world-class guides, a unique culture, and outstanding wilderness accommodation all combine to make for a remarkable adventure.
Itinerary at a glance
Day 1: Arrive Ulaanbaatar, overnight in hotel.
Day 2: Guests travel to the river either by driving overland or a chartered flight in Cessna Caravan, depending on departure date.
Days 3 – 8: Float and fish between
Day 9: Return to UB from the river. If you drove to the river, you’ll fly back; and vice versa. Overnight in hotel.
Day 10: Depart Mongolia.
Upon arrival in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, an English-speaking guide and driver transfer guests to a comfortable hotel in the vibrant city center. After a relaxing evening, guests travel to the river by vehicle or charter flight depending on the departure date.
You’ll fish through a diverse, mountainous landscape targeting taimen, Amur trout, lenok, and Amur pike.
Guests explore new water every day, floating between tented camps strategically placed along the river.
Anglers enjoy fishing from comfortable ClackaCraft drift boats. It’s quite an experience standing tall in a drift boat while sight casting to a feeding taimen.
These trips run with just one guide and two guests. The trip is supported by a small camp team that transfers equipment downstream using gear boats.
Each day’s float covers 15 – 25 kilometers (10 – 15 miles) of water, with a midday break for a shore lunch.
Only international anglers holding a fishing permit allocated through Mongolia River Outfitters may legally fish this river. Our exclusive management agreement requires catch-and-release, fly-fishing only with single, barbless hooks.
Guests are accommodated in very large tent-tipis complete with cots and simple bedrolls. When we arrive at each evening’s camp, the professional staff has your bags waiting, beds made, fires lit, and dinner prepared in the spacious dining tent. It’s luxury in the wilderness!
